Idaho Earth Builders was founded by Paul Lamon as part of Idaho Earth Habitat. Paul first became interested in energy efficiency and alternative building methods in the late 70's. Studying the benefits of earth-sheltered homes exposed him to other 'alternative' building methods. When he came across Rammed Earth, he was hooked. The benefits of earth sheltering without having to hide the house under a pile of earth? He was immediately sold on the simplicity and elegance of the rammed earth approach.

Paul Lamon

For the next 20 years and through a couple of career changes he harbored the dream of one day building his own rammed earth home. As he got closer to the reality of building this home he began to look for experienced rammed earth builders anywhere in the Snake River region. He even contacted rammed earth builders in California & New Mexico. None of them knew of any rammed earth builders anywhere near our area.

For the next few years Paul kept wondering why no one was building homes this way in our part of the country. The climate, the resources, the attitude of the population, everything seemed perfect for it. Then Paul met Tami - the love of his life - in late 2006. He shared his dream of building a Rammed Earth home and it was she who helped him see the question in a new way. Instead of asking "Why isn't somebody building these homes here?" she helped him realize he should be asking himself: "Why am I not building these homes here?" One more career change for Paul and Idaho Earth Builders was born.

In the summer of 2007 Paul temporarily moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to work and study with third-generation Rammed Earth builder Chandler Huston of Huston Rammed Earth. Paul is now back in the Treasure Valley and ready to bring the beauty, comfort, serenity and energy efficiency of Rammed Earth to the Snake River region.
